Mrs Sawyer
A very old and winkled woman, who visited Holmes to collect the wedding ring that he advertised as being found in the Brixton area (A Study in Scarlet). She explained that the wedding ring belonged to her daughter Mrs Sally Dennis. Mrs Sawyer gave her address as 13, Duncan Street, Houndsditch. Holmes followed her to help with his investigate of the murder of Enoch J. Drebber. When he arrived at 13, Duncan Street the cab was empty and Holmes came to the conclusion that "It must have been a young man, and an active one, too".

Scissor-grinder
A scissor-grinder was one of the men outside Briony Lodge when Holmes and Watson were waiting for Irene Adler to return home. A scissor-grinder would work his way around large households offering to sharpen pairs of scissors or knifes. (A Scandal in Bohemia)
 
Sergeant
A Sergeant is left by Inspector Athelney Jones to guard Bartholomew Sholto's chamber after Jones had arrested the rest of the household. (The Sign of Four)
 
Servant/Maid
A servant, at 221B Baker Street, answered the front door and showed 'a very old and winkled woman' to the lodgings of Holmes. She was calling in answer to the advertisement that he placed in the papers regarding a lost wedding ring. There was no further description of the servant. However, later in the story, Watson hears the maid go off to bed. Was this the same person? (A Study in Scarlet)
 
Shabbily Dressed Men
A group of men were 'smoking and laughing in a corner' outside Briony Lodge. Watson noticed them while he and Holmes were waiting for Irene Adler to return home after her evening 'drive'. (A Scandal in Bohemia)
 
Mr Sherman
Sherman lived at 3 Pinchin Lane, Lambeth and is the owner of 'Toby'. Watson calls on Sherman after the murder of Bartholomew Sholto. Watson describes him as "a lanky, lean old man, with stooping shoulders, a stringy neck and blue-tinted glasses". (The Sign of Four)
 
Old Shipmate
Arthur Charpentier told the police that he had met an old shipmate, after Enoch J Drebber had taken a cab. Arthur could not remember where the shipmate lived, this led to his arrest for the murder of Drebber. (A Study in Scarlet)
 
Bartholomew Sholto
Brother of Thaddeus Sholto, and victim of Jonathan Small and Tonga. He discovers the whereabouts of the Agra Treasure but is murdered before he can enjoy the spoils. (The Sign of Four)
 
Major Sholto
A friend of Captain Morstan. His regiment was the Thirty-fourth Bombay Infantry. Major Sholto had retired shortly before the disappearance of the Captain. He live at Upper Norwood. The Major had two sons Thaddeus and Bartholomew. He died on the 28th April 1882. (The Sign of Four
 
Thaddeus Sholto
Brother of Bartholomew Sholto, sons of Major Sholto. Thaddeus sent Miss Morstan a pearl every year for six years. He has arranged with his brother for Miss Morstan to visit them with two friends (Holmes and Watson), but before they get there Bartholomew is murdered. When the police arrive they arrest Thaddeus but Holmes has another suspect in mind. (The Sign of Four

Jonathan Small
A member of the sign of the four. Holmes gave this description of Small to Inspector Jones after he had arrested Thaddeus Sholto for the murder of his brother Bartholomew, "He is poorly educated man, small, active, with his right leg off, and wearing a wooden stump which is worn away upon the inner side. His left boot has a coarse, square-toed sole, with an iron band round the heel. He is a middle-aged man, much sunburned, and has been a convict." (The Sign of Four)
 
Jack Smith
Son of Mordecai Smith. Holmes asked him what he would like, Jack replied "I'd like a shillin',". (The Sign of Four)
 
Jim Smith

Mrs Smith
