Maiwand
Maiwand is a village on Afghanistan, 50 miles northwest of Kandahar. The Battle of Maiwand saw a British brigade under General Burrows defeated by Ayub Khan on the 27th July 1880. Watson served at this battle in A Study in Scarlet.

Millbank Penitentiary
A prison on the north bank of the Thames (on the site of the present Tate Britain Gallery). Designed by Jeremy Bentham and built at a cost of £500,000, it was finished in 1821. It was closed in 1890 and pulled down in 1902. (The Sign of Four)
